How a Restaurant Turnaround Expert Will Get You Out of the Red

The restaurant industry is tough. Owning a restaurant means competing in an industry where standing out from other restaurants and succeeding requires careful planning and difficult sacrifices. And even after that, you often find yourself struggling. Some of this comes from economic forces, which you can’t do much to change. But one area that impacts your ability to succeed is what you know. If you find your restaurant operating in the red, don’t let pride get in the way of your success. A restaurant turnaround expert can help find ways to get your business back on track.

One difficulty you likely face in turning around a flailing restaurant comes in trying to look objectively at your performance. After all, few business people intentionally steer in the wrong direction. You may feel intensely that you have done everything to the best of your abilities. You care about your restaurant, and you might have trouble separating your feelings about what you want to do from your thoughts about what you should do. Many restaurant owners dig themselves deeper while believing they are clawing their way out.

A restaurant turnaround expert offers a clearer vision of what your restaurant is, and what it should be. Rather than trying to look from inside the hole, this person can offer a view from above. He or she might offer options you have never considered, based on a combination of experience with what works and new ideas for a restaurant turnaround that are not tethered to your initial concepts for your restaurant.

Understand How You Got Here

Before you can find an effective new direction, you often need to take a step back to assess how you got where you are. The experience can be sobering; nobody likes to dwell on past mistakes. What makes it more difficult, though, is confirmation bias. People sometimes have a tendency to seek information that supports the choices and decisions they make, rather than to analyze critically and openly what they have done. For many, the most natural conclusion is that a sinking business is entirely out of their control.

Here, too, a restaurant turnaround expert can provide guidance. He or she can sit down with you and trace back from where you are to the point at which business started to flag, and often to a critical moment or time period beforehand that may have precipitated your decline. Pinpointing these moments can often allow you to determine specific points at which you veered off course. Once you identify these, you might find a way to map out your return to more prosperous ventures.

It’s Not Personal?

As the popular cliche tells us, “It’s not personal; it’s business.” For restaurant owners, though, it often is personal. You probably didn’t open your restaurant because you thought it would be easy money. Even if you did, your fight to turn around the business usually comes, in part, from an intensely personal pride and determination to succeed. This need not be a bad thing. Running any business, and particularly a restaurant, requires a personal investment of time, energy and money; success comes in part because people like you take what you do seriously and refuse to quit when it gets hard.

When you are so personally involved, though, a restaurant turnaround expert can be instrumental in helping you see everything you do, and can or should do, more objectively. Your hard work and desire can give the emotional lift you need; working with a consultant with fewer ties to your restaurant can help provide a clearer vision for success.
