What Are Latest Construction Trends from a Hotel Consultant Prospective?

The hotel construction industry changes every year as existing styles get outdated and new trends become all the rage. For 2016 and beyond, a new set of “must-haves” have emerged and are making huge waves throughout the country. Whether you’re planning to enter the hotel business or you’re already a part of it, our hotel consultant group suggests keeping the following trends in mind:

Residential-style design

Hotels have long had a reputation of being too formal and sterile-looking. This is one of the main reasons why many travelers prefer home shares like Airbnb, which allow them to stay in comfortable spaces that have a “lived in” atmosphere.

Many hotel companies have realized this and are now striving to provide home-like experiences to guests. Staybridge Suites, for instance, has become known for its residential-style surroundings, while the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa is designed to reflect the comfortable atmosphere of the traditional Mexican hacienda, albeit with a modern twist.

Livable lobbies

Lobbies are no longer just a waiting area; they’ve become a place where guests can go people-watching, socialize with each other or with their visitors, or simply rest at the end of a long day. Because of this, many a hotel consultant recommend that hotels redesign their lobbies to be smaller in scale and more comfortable. Hotels that cater to millennials, for example, give their lobbies a relaxed ambiance that’s great for socialization, while those that mostly have business travelers have more functional spaces that promote productivity and efficiency.

Co-working spaces

Many people nowadays work remotely, and they keep on working even when they’re traveling for business and leisure. A hotel consultant may advise you to keep up with this trend by creating on-site co-working spaces so guests don’t need to go anywhere else to make reports and presentations, have video conferences with clients, or simply read and answer emails. These shared workspaces are more preferable than the traditional business center, which has gotten obsolete over the years because most guests now have their own laptops and mobile devices. Many hotels offer their co-working areas not just to guests but also to non-guests, which is a great move since it expands their scope and turns their space into a place where both local and foreign professionals can meet and interact with each other.

Green initiatives

Environment awareness has become a major priority among millennials and even non-millennials. This is why many hotels need to adapt green practices. Those that are still in the design and building phase, for example, can opt to use sustainable timber and concrete. They can also utilize construction techniques that require minimal water and energy. A hotel consultant can make recommendations for those who are planning to renovate their existing hotels. Something like installing solar panels to produce their own energy. Investing in water storage and conservation technologies to reduce their water consumption will help as well.
